Why Not?

A little over a year ago, my life changed. It changed from something I thought would be forever. I was wrong. Not all things are meant to last forever, and that’s ok.

I had been in a relationship for about 3.5 years, and it ended. I was heartbroken, sad, confused, and just not myself. The first couple of weeks after the relationship ended, I was really down and just wanted to “make it work.” Nothing I did worked, but I KNEW it wasn’t the right relationship deep down inside. I had so many signs throughout the 3.5 years that we were together that we weren’t a good fit, and I just ignored them. I just wanted to feel something. Anything. With the relationship at a close, I had to find something that was just for me. Something to get my mind off of the “what ifs” and the “just take me back” thoughts.

I have always loved music. It makes me move and smile and every time I hear a beat you can catch me shaking, clapping, and singing to the top of my lungs. (it doesn’t always sound good, but whatever) I decided that it was time to do something for myself.

Why not?

I made a post on Facebook asking who taught drum lessons in the area and I found the one and only, Myhers School of Music. I called and told them that I couldn't do afternoons because of my schedule and that morning sessions would be best. One of the owners who typically teaches guitar lessons agreed to teach me, and I am grateful for that blessing.

Michael Myhers is a one-of-a-kind human who loves music, people, and just groovin’ to the beat. He helps make my “Self-Care Thursdays” get off to a great start each time I go. I came in not knowing much about drums. The only thing I knew at the time was that I needed a stress reliever and consistency in my life. It felt amazing to have something to do and somewhere to go each week that was strictly for me. Just for me. Do something that brought a smile to my face and took my mind off of the hurt I was processing.

Why not?

Michael didn’t know any of this. He would comment on my bright and bubbly smile and personality not knowing that I had just spent the morning crying or in the gym picking up heavy shit just to take my mind off of the stress. I needed that. I needed someone who didn’t know my pain. I needed someone who would just see me for me and not think, “Oh my gosh this poor old girl just had her heart broken and her whole life is changing and I just need to be nice to her for the heck of it” I will be forever grateful that my Creator answered my call by placing the thought of trying something new in my heart.

The Recital

Now, after about a year of learning to read music and banging on the drums, Michael hit me with the news. The Myhers School of Music was having a recital and he wanted me to participate! YAAAYYYYYYYY!!!! I don’t think he really thought that I would agree to it. But being the performance kinda girl that I am…of course did!

Why not?

I told all of my friends and family about my new and exciting venture and they laughed and agreed to be there! My 13-year-old niece was a tad bit embarrassed, but she agreed to show up and support me anyway.

I did run into a dilemma. The day of my drum recital just so happened to be the same day as a local dance competition. I had a few dances performing that day, and I had to make a decision. Show up to watch my dancers or show up to my drum recital. I thought this was a sign that maybe I shouldn’t show up to the recital.

I am so grateful that I work with pretty amazing dance teachers that supported my new venture and encouraged me to go through with the recital. I showed up to watch my dancers that morning and then left to go to the drum recital that evening. On my way out, the dancers, teachers, and parents wished me good luck and gave me the encouragement I needed. It felt pretty damn good to feel the love and support even though I chose to do something for myself.

When I arrived at the recital location, I had butterflies all in my belly and I was feeling SUPER DUPER nervous! It was a crazy, but really cool feeling that I had not felt in a very long time. I couldn’t stop smiling! My family and friends showed up to support me, and I was on cloud 9!

I was emotional because I had been working and learning and growing for over a year, and I really didn’t want to let my teacher and family down. I wanted them to be proud of me. I wanted to be proud of myself. But I knew the purpose of this adventure was more than just for one day. The work was waaaaaayyyy more than just learning to play the drums. I had been working on loving myself. I had been working on giving myself the space that was needed to heal and grow.

Why not?

Why not? Why not do something that takes your mind off of things to help you through a hard time? Why not cry a little if it makes you feel better? Why not play the drums and agree to be in a recital in front of people? You might surprise yourself. I sure did.

In the end, it's you.

You have the ability deep down inside to be in control of yourself. Take the leap and do the THING! Don't let anyone or anything stop you from doing you, girl! If you have a goal you want to achieve, then do it.

Because why not?

Special shoutout to my family and friends who showed up to support me on the day of my drum recital. These ladies have been there for me in more ways than I can count over the course of my entire life! I love you more than words can explain!
